Australians have forgotten how to decide their own destiny
Prime ministers are fond of playing the ‘national interest’ card when they are struggling to provide an acceptable explanation for their action. John Howard was forever doing it to justify all manner of dubious policies. By claiming a particular policy was in the ‘national interest’, and implying he was the only one capable of defining that interest, Howard often managed
to escape serious scrutiny from journalists. And so it goes on.
